Lower East Side

Vandal

Overview

Lower Eastside club-restaurant from the Tao Group and chef Chris Santos. The space is massive, spanning multiple dining spaces and a downstairs club all decorated with sprawling colorful murals. You aren't really going there to eat, you're going there to party with a group. However, the menu is surprisingly  good considering it doesn't have to be. The kitchen dispenses elevated global street fare offered tapas-style. Much like Santos's other spots, there are creative takes on every dish like pretzel steak tartare, broccoli cheese soup dumps, sticky rice dumplings and crispy bao buns.

The Flower Shop

IMG_1270.jpg

Overview:

You'll find The Flower Shop on Eldridge Street, wedged between bodywork parlors, dumpling shops and beauty salons. The venue is mostly known for it's downstairs bar which has turned into a scene on weekends but the upstairs also provides dining options and an additional bar. The 70's decor is fantastic, with a cool grandma's house/old time parlor vibe complete with wood paneled walls and vintage wallpaper. The crowd varies by time and day but it's a great place to grab a drink or have weekend brunch.

Kossar's Bagels & Bialys

IMG_4779.jpg

Overview:

Kossar's was opened in 1936 by Morris Kossar. Today it is the oldest remaining Bialy bakery in the United States. The establishment was taken over by new ownership in recent years but remains committed to upholding the traditions of this great Jewish appetizing shop. They offer a range of items to go or for dining in. In their cases you’ll find stacks of cream cheese, cured fish, loaves of babka, and fresh challah. You can choose from fresh bins of brick oven baked bialys and kettle boiled bagels. They will stack your bagel high with any combo of salmon, sable, white fish, or egg salad. For something a little modern, they have gooey chocolate babka French toast and pizza bagels. I look forward to many more years of their success.

Ms. Yoo

Overview:

Ms. Yoo is a new club/restaurant from the owner of the always delicious Mokbar, Esther Choi. Choi named the place after her grandmother and the sleek space features a dining room, beautifully decorated bar, and large club space on the second level. The food is contemporary Korean gastropub fare. The snacks are addictive like nori popcorn, honey butter chips and squid fries. Choi makes an insanely gluttonous 10oz. burger smothered in kimchi bacon onion jam & american cheese. Finally, her take on mac & cheese is brilliant subbing out Korean rice cakes for noodles.  Portions are large and the food is heavy, so it's best to share as you make your way through their list of craft cocktails.

Minnie's

Overview:

Minnie's is a new venture from first time restauranteur Millie Stallings. The corner space perfectly embodies the area - cool & casual with lots of variety on the menu. The quirky interior leaves much to see like paintings of naked women adorning the cushions, coasters, and menus. The food is mainly American with Middle East & Mediterranean accents. You'll see items like smoked cauliflower fritto with harissa yogurt, lamb neck flatbread, and fluke ceviche. If you're just in the mood for a burger, theirs is simple and delicious with fontina & caramelized onion on toasted brioche. Dishes are very sharable and affordable so its nice to go with a group and try your way through the menu.

Esther & Carol

Overview:

Esther & Carol takes its name from the owners' mothers and it is a stylish new venue in the Lower East Side. It is a split level concept- a neighborhood restaurant upstairs and a neon club/recording studio in the basement. It's like business in the front, party in the back. The menu is an approachable list of things your average human wants on a menu - caesar salad, crab cake, burger, a pork chop. There is a nod to making "dishes for all dietary needs" including many vegetarian and gluten free options. The best dish is the super satisfying buttermilk fried chicken which comes in a generous portion accompanied by jalapeno aleppo syrup, bourbon watermelon salad, & mac and cheese.

Black Tap

Overview

The small, casual storefront that was the original Black Tap opened just a few years ago and has rapidly expanded to 4 NYC locations. Restaurants range in size but each is laid back with an impressive coating of graffiti artwork. If you don't know this place you've probably still seen their milkshakes, um, everywhere that media exists and their massive lines at each store. They have over the top, ultra Instagrammable shakes coated with every type of sweet. The real star of the menu, however, are the sandwiches. You can choose from over12 options of creative burger toppings, falafel burger, or an excellent fried chicken. The menu undisputedly offers one of best burgers in New York and the classic is absolutely perfect - juicy & flavorful, topped with perfectly melted cheese, crisp fresh lettuce/tomato, and special sauce. It is undoubtedly worth the wait, and I NEVER say that.

Regina's Grocery

IMG_4470.jpg

Overview

Regina's Grocery is like a blast from the past in the best way. The small Lower East Side storefront has been remodeled to look like the old school Italian deli's in Brooklyn, complete with the beautiful Italian Regina behind the counter. They have filled the gap in a neighborhood that was seriously lacking a deli. The offerings are an impressively long list (15+) of creative sandwich combos. Prosciutto, mortadella, hot sopressata, smoked ham and fresh mozz are heavily represented.  In addition to the sandwiches they have a selection of Italian groceries and specialty items like hot peppers, pasta salad and marinated artichokes.

375° Thrice Cooked Fries

Overview

I mean...this is a tiny storefront in the Lower East Side dedicated to only french fries. If that doesn't get your gears moving then you probably have no soul. Thrice cooked fries refers to a unique process to cooking the fries which includes boiling them once and frying them twice. The result is crunchy, salty, thick cut heaven. You can choose from 11 different dips like green pineapple curry, jalapeno-cilantro ranch, chipotle-tomatillo ketchup and truffle mayo. They also come loaded in a variety of styles like nacho, kimchi, bahn mi and poutine. Additionally you'll find specials like an excellent version of fish n' chips. Whatever you choose to order, it will be comfort food heaven. Keep them in mind for late night drunk eats, open until 2am during the week and 4am on weekends.

Orchard Grocer

Overview

I wouldn't be a vegan unless something horrible happened that forced me to give up meat & dairy. That being said, there have been amazing advances in culinary techniques that have elevated vegan food into something desirable even to a hardened carnivore like myself. Orchard Grocer is a quaint shop in LES that is taking advantage of those techniques. The interior is a small grocery shop with a grab-n-go deli counter serving great vegan sandwiches, salads, and bakery options. The range of flavors and creativity is truly extraordinary. They have veganized classics like a reuben made with beet-brined Blackbird seitan and an insanely flavorful bagel and "lox" made with shaved smoked carrot. The most exciting selection is the mock pulled pork made with pulled jackfruit, house-made pomegranate ginger bbq sauce & red cabbage cole slaw. They made me .a believer.

Sons of Essex

Overview

My world will never tire of Lower East Side bars with a dope playlist and good cocktails. To find the entrance of SoA you will walk through an unassuming coffee shop which hides a massive bar space. I'd describe the interior os prohibition-era hip - ie tons of reclaimed wood and leather bound books. Once inside there will be hoards of girls in the club-esque space swaying to 90's hip hop. The menu is shockingly good for a place that I didn't realize served food (I'm drunk a lot, so sue me). They offer a good mix of super craveable comfort food like short rib tacos, chicken pot pie, and a juicy burger. Their truffle mac & cheese is like crack; I'd stab someone with a fork if they tried to take it from me.
