Clinton St Baking Company

You have probably walked by this place before. It's a little storefront on Clinton & Houston where 25 people are shivering outside the door waiting for their chance at a seat. I had tried to go here 3 times and never succeeded. If the wait is 2 hours at 10am on a Tuesday my sensibility takes hold and I give up. When they purchased the space next door and doubled in size, I decided to go back. Since I needed to know what all the insanity was about, naturally we ordered the whole menu.

New York Magazine has voted this place the best pancakes in NYC, twice. They were exceptional, like sweet little pillows on my tongue. However, the real stunner for me was the rest of the menu. Who the hell knew they did other things besides pancakes so well (well, probably a lot of people)? The latkes were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, on par with what momma makes (sorry mom). They take the added step of curing the salmon in house, even though you could practically see Russ & Daughters from the window. We stared at each other in utter confusion as we ate one of the better burgers I've had in NYC - because again - I really thought this was pancake central and nothing else. They bake their own buns and grind the meat in house. This place is like comfort food central. Full of American classics, made with the best ingredients, clearly the highest standards, and a fuck ton of butter. Here's what we had:

Pancakes with Warm Maple Butter and wild maine blueberry

Pancakes with Warm Maple Butter and chocolate chunks

Huevos Rancheros - Sunny side up eggs with red beans, guacamole, jalapeno sourcream, salsa picante, pepper jack cheese & chorizo on a house made corntortilla

Crispy Potato Pancakes with house smoked salmon, caviar and lemon creme fraiche

Clinton St. Cheeseburger (ground daily in-house) with swiss & caramelized sweet onions on a toastedpain d'avignon roll, with hand cut fries and slaw
